About Gyttja
What is this bike about?
Gyttja is our idea of a rugged, reliable, repairable and highly customizable Bicycle platform. It’s like the blank canvas of the day in front of you, follow our tour plan or explore by yourself. We deliver the bike or the canvas, your decision.
Cool, but again what kind of bike is Gyttja?
Would you buy it if we say it’s our definition of Overland Bikepacking? Or would we trigger you better if we say it is a bad ass e-assisted Commuter? But wait, isn’t Adventure Bike not the terminus what clicks most boxes best?
Gyttja is not a Crossover, because these can do it all, but nothing good. Gyttja is different. Gyttja is, what you decide what your Gyttja should be, what wheel size, what geometry, what drivetrain you really need. In that moment or on your next challenge.
We sum it up in the 2 messages we use in our marketing, what are more than sketchy marketing babble phrases for us, they are our mission statements. GYTTJA All Steel – All Ride and Conquer Rugged Paths with GYTTJA. If steel is your thing and you like to feel prepared for the interesting paths ahead in nature and life, Gyttja can be your ride.
What does the word Gyttja mean?
Gyttja is Swedish for a kind of mud, the dark slimy kind your foot will automatically find when you’re taking a bath in a Swedish lake.
About us and our Network
Who’s NCCR?
We are a small family company based in Swedish Häsingland with the background of constructing and manufacturing motorcycle chassis in Docol Tube R8 Swedish steel.
In 2024, we decided to investigate bicycle manufacturing, mainly as private interest. Out of that it got more and in March 2025 we launched the Packoped, what translated the iconic Swedish Flatbed (Flak)moped into a today e-assisted Cargobike. Gyttja is our next step in the transition of NCCR as a Swedish Bicycle Manufacturer.
Who’s ME Plåt and ME Racing?
Another family company, based in Borlänge, Dalarna, where the steel we use for the Gyttja bikes is made. ME has decades of experience in sheet metal forming and building constructions in high strength steel with the Docol Tube R8 material. Together with ME, we develop efficient ways to manufacture strong, reliable, lightweight constructions in the most economical way, with the goal in mind to bring back bicycle manufacturing to Sweden and to support the idea of a high-class European made Bicycle brand.
Gyttja Technology
Which materials do you use?
We use Docol Tube R8, an automotive steel material manufactured by SSAB in Sweden. The high strength tubes are approved by FIA for Motorsport usage, and they are easy to weld without gas filling. Also, mild steel, Chromoly or stainless components can be easy attached. Our material does not require TIG welding, in case of repair, any roadside welding technology can be used to get you to move on. Additionally, we use Strenx sheet metal and Toolox steel for machined components.
What are the Docol tube R8 properties in Relation to 4130 Chromo???
Docol Tube R8 Advantages:
Superior Strength: Docol R8 is 10-15% stronger than 4130 Chromoly.
Better Ductility & Fatigue Resistance: It has better elongation and greater resistance to fatigue, leading to a more consistent and controlled failure mode.
Easier Fabrication: It tolerates heavy fabrication better, shows less warping, and stays more relaxed in tooling.
No Heat Treatment Required: Docol R8 doesn’t require heat treatment after welding.
Consistent Properties: Its rolled and welded strip construction provides consistent mechanical and dimensional properties.
Clean Finish: It comes with a clean mill finish requiring minimal surface prep and is free from the oxide and decarb layers common in 4130.
Predictable Failure: Engineers favor Docol for its predictable fracture behavior.
4130 Chromoly Characteristics:
Established Standard: It’s the traditional, go-to material for racecar chassis and roll cages.
Brittle Heat-Affected Zone: The heat-affected zone (HAZ) of 4130 can become brittle and prone to fracture after welding.
More Prone to Warping: 4130 can warp and distort more during fabrication compared to Docol.
Spiral Fracture: During tensile testing, 4130 tubes often show a spiral-patterned fracture.
Wall Thickness Variation: Due to its manufacturing process, the wall thickness of 4130 can vary.
Key Differences in Performance:
Bending: While bending Docol R8 is similar to 4130, 4130 generally requires larger bend radii to maintain strength and can show more spring back during bending.
Failure Mode: 4130 tends to fracture before Docol R8, which holds on for longer due to its ductile nature.
Weldability: Both materials are compatible with TIG and MIG welding.
Conclusion: Docol Tube R8 is a modern, advanced alternative to 4130 Chromoly for high-performance applications, offering enhanced strength, ductility, and fabrication ease while maintaining a high level of safety.
Do you traditional braze fit?
No, we TIG weld and as additional option might mix in 3D printed metal parts.
Are the tubes butted or tapered?
No, we use different wall sizes and diameter tubes, but they are same specs all way. We have access to special formed tubes, like oval or aero shapes, but for now we use circular tubes on the Gyttja bikes.
What does it mean, a Gyttja bike is modular?
All Gyttja frames and bikes are Pinion, Neodrives, UDH and DH fork ready, what means you can at any time decide to up- or down-grade your ride. With the detachable rear end, it’s highly compact to ship and easy to adapt to any user case.
Can I mount a conventional (no DH) fork to my Gyttja?
We don’t offer that, but yes you can.
You really make an adapter to replace the Pinion gearbox with a conventional bottom bracket?
Yes, when you order your Gyttja bike as a Single Speed it still comes with a bridge to accept the Pinion gear box, but with the NCCR bottom bracket adapter mounted. There are several advantages and one disadvantage. That one first, the solution is heavier. But you can mount a Pinion if you like, we can vary the bottom bracket position with different adapters, and you get some extra storage space for tools and other stuff. Finally, with our Pinion adapters, any bike shop in the last corner of the planet gets you back on the road.
What’s the weight of the Gyttja Bike / frame?
The weight of the frame is 2400 and 2500 g (with battery holders for the e-assisted version 2800-3050g). Plus, the tail section which is 1700-1860g.
Each weld-in bushing for M5 add another 10 gramm.
The e-assisted bikes with all equipment as shown with all extras on the Bespoked are:
26,9 kg for the Gyttja M with the 26×4” FAT tires
29,8 kg for the Gyttja XL with the suspension fork and 29” wheel set
As a thumb formula, real weight of the Neodrives Hub motor with battery, wiring harness and remote plus the Pinion gear box (no belt sprockets, no belt) is 10,2kg.
Why Gyttja bikes got Schrader valves on the frame?
For corrosion protection and for early crack detection, we fill the upper and lower main tube with Nitrogen. In the accessible, easy to inspect, open tubes (seat post and steering head), we use on the inside linseed oil as corrosion protection.
Can I still have traditional 5mm threaded bushings for bottle cages and luggage?
Yes of course, we use closed bushings and weld them in gas tight.
Do you offer routing components in the frame?
Only for the seat post (dropper), as we think corrosion protection and crack detection is more important. It also makes changing the cables difficult. We use 3D printed wire and cable guards for easy accessibility.
Can I choose chain drive?
Yes you can, but not from us. We have more than 3 decades of experience with belt systems from road to race, from consumer user cases to own constructions. Because of that and because we have with Universal Transmission a powerful partner on our side, it’s for us the belt. Single Speed with belt, Pinion with belt and Neodrives with belt – between those you can choose. But we accept the other view and because of that, all Gyttja bikes are UDH ready. What means, if you are a member of the chain gang, you are welcome.
Will there be a middle eMotor Gyttja Pedelec?
Honestly, we don’t think so. There are many great bikes out on the market using that concept and it definitely has its performance advantages if it is done right – in the right bike. The Gyttja is designed to be technology open and mid-motors with each of its unique mounting footprints that would drive the project into a corner. Hub motors are made by many and are easy to swap, bottom brackets will be available as long bicycles will be used. Belt drive is set, but chain possible by UDH, a gear hub bio bike might be possible as well, but the mid motor we can’t see as a benefit in our concept.
What surface treatment options do you offer?
All Gyttja Bikes get Cerakote coating as standard with a base color and optional multi color speckles. Powder coating is another possible option. Frame only sales are usually raw.
These VENTILE bags you show, are they available?
We haven’t decided yet. We would first like to get some real-world testing if the material fulfills the demands in bikepacking. It is certainly a very interesting material regarding the properties and ecological footprint and we have use it in other projects for many years. We hope to inspire professional bike packing component makers to investigate VENTILE as an alternative to PVC materials.
To sum it up, what’s an entry Gyttja compared with a full spec Gyttja bike?
Picture a single speed, belt driven bike with Öhlins DH fork triples, no suspension, just what you need to get moving. This bike is already prepared to accept all components that on the other end make the full spec bike. That will be the Öhlins DH 38 fork, the Pinion gear box, and/or the Neodrives hub motor, our Lighting components and some variations on the rider interface, like handlebar, saddles, etc.
Gyttja Geometry
Which frame sizes are available?
As a standard, Gyttja frames are available as S, M, L and XL. These frames, we pre-manufacture to have the most competitive price and have them (and complete bikes) fast ready to send out. Anyhow, we see ourselves as individual frame builders and we work together with our partners at ME Racing to develop the Multi-Jig frame building system in a way to manufacture individual frame geometries in an economical way. If it is either the crazy idea you have since years what you like to try out, or if it is that you come with your Bikefit data and we discuss exact the ergo you want, we can make it possible.
Why a DH fork?
We come from motorcycle customizing and racing, where geometry change by rising and lowering the front is an essential cornerstone to find the best geometry. Indeed, a bio powered bicycle is highly sensitive in weight and there is a real compromise you must evaluate if it really makes sense for your user case. We are not on a crusade and our steering head takes also non-DH forks, so all is good. But, the Gyttja has a standard a DH fork because of two reasons. First, you can vary easily the geometry in both offset (different triples available) and height. Second, especially in our rigid version, you get some really sturdy additional bike packing possibilities, like longer parts upwards along the fork and double luggage rolls horizontal.
The Öhlins 38mm DH fork we can configure with 90, 100, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180 or 200 mm travel way.
What’s that with the bolt-on tail section?
Gyttja is constructed as a Hardtail with a high bolt-on tail section. There are several reasons why we choose this construction, but regarding the geometry it gives Gyttja a great advantage as it allows changes in sizes, materials, flex and drivetrain very easily.
And with a total of 30mm moving in the slots, we can not only tension the CDX drive belt by moving the tail ground parallel, we also have an additional part to influence the geometry. Take that flip chip.
Will there be a rear suspension option?
Our rear 3-point bolt on point can take a suspension set-up in the future, yes. But it will be mainly for the bio set-up. To combine a rear suspension with a hub motor is not exactly what you want, at least on paper. But for sure, we will try it out and draw our own conclusions.
What Tire size do you recommend?
The one that suits your needs and rides best. Our actual Gyttja builds carry a 26×4” FAT setup in the M frame and 29/29(27,5) in the XL frame, which means in those frames, tires up to 100mm wide and 29” high find room. We think that the 26×4” FAT is a perfect solution to combine with a hub motor, as the tire delivers the suspension function. But, Mullet, even mini-Mullet or a traditional 26” MTB, or even a 32” is in the cards, why not?
Why do you use different belt lines?
We put a lot of thought and engineering in that point. We see at track usage a lot of extra stress through ground contact both on the bottom of the Pinion gearbox and at the belt line. That’s why the usual solution with an exposed belt tensioner was not an option. Our high mounting point of the tail section allows us to be creative, while its length adjustability allows us to skip any idler or tension wheel solution. This leaves us in a comfortable situation where we can do it, if there is an advantage in it, like getting the belt out of the way from branches and impacts. But we can also realize a minimum friction and lightest weight direct belt line, like we have done on the Gyttja with the 26×4″ tires.
Don’t all those options of geometry changes overstrain the riders?
Yes, we see that problem coming. We will ride out the Standard geometry settings and supply in manuals and 3D printed fixtures the toolbox to double check them easy and straight forward. We know that KISS (Keep it simple and stupid) is what many in the industry think is the only way to get along with their customers, often combined with that “we know it all better, girl”, arrogant attitude. Understandable in one way, your manufacturer want them and you to stay safe. On the other hand, if we at NCCR sell a frame, the project is anyhow out of our hands. So why not offering the Swiss army Knife of the bikes and say if you cut yourself, ooops sorry? At NCCR we think that Gyttja is for people who are willing to read manuals, who communicate and use their brain. But no one is forced to leave the recommended specs, if you buy a Gyttja bike you can be sure that it operates safely and behaves like any other bike.
Gyttja Components
If I order a complete Gyttja bike, not just a frame, can I still opt out some of the components?
That’s to discuss, but if you like to use your own wheels (you name to us) or some components, that will be no deal breaker. But if it is significant opt out, then we will handle the order as a frame order with some additional components. That decision is on us.
Which PINION gear box options do you offer?
We offer all Pinion options what make technical sense, including SmartShift.
We are offering at the moment no MGU, though.
Why do you use a rear hub motor, aren’t they bad uphill?
As we see the e-assisted Gyttja as a reliable Overland Bikepacker, we think in combination with 9 to 18 speed Pinion, the Neodrives hub motor is the perfect compromise. First of all, the Gates CDX belt needs to handle only the torque generated by the rider, not the additional torque of the mid e-motor. That gives us together with the Pinion gearbox one of the most reliable drivetrains of the industry. But that we give – it’s an electric assisted bicycle, and up the hill the widespread Pinion gearbox is what brings you to the summit. But downhill you enjoy the recuperation, and you sneak through the woods more silent than any of the mid-motor screamers. For us, the Neodrives system with the easy to operate simply remote, plus the App (optional simply display), is a pleasantly unagitated reliable player, in today’s connectivity madness.
With the neodrives system, which battery do you use?
We use the BMZ V10 720 Wh 36V battery. It’s 4 kg heavy. The range varies regarding with road profile, temperatures and the amount of assistance. Between 150km with minimum and 50km with maximum assistance should be realistic.
Will there be more battery options or range extender available in the future?
We will definitely look into how the market and technology develop.
What Brake components I can choose?
We offer the Gyttja bikes with German U-Micro Mobility or Hope brakes from England both with 4piston callipers. In both set-ups we use 180mm/203mm Hope discs.
Which Wheel Sets can I choose?
As standard, we offer the bikes with reliable rims from Mach 1 in France, from there we get the spokes, as well. The second option for rims is Ryde. At the hubs for the start, we use Hope Pro5, but there we are not final through with our decisions. We will add detailed options very soon.
Mudguards
Wuppernova developed mudguards especially for the Gyttja and they can be purchased through us or directly at Wuppernova.
What components Gyttja use for the “Riders Interface”?
As a small manufacturer with the idea of building highly innovative bikes that should not break the bank, we must look into all details and at the same time stay focused on our mission. We don’t want to be the next manufacturer with a price list starting North of 10K and we also don’t have the budget or manpower to source around the world.
With Ergotec in Germany, we found a partner with exactly the range of parts we need to complete our Gyttja bikes. They test and rate their components in safety levels, and even if they are over 100 years old, they are innovative, they manufacture in Germany where it fits and they let do things abroad to stay competitive. But they never sacrifice quality. That’s why as standard, Gyttja bikes come with selected Ergotec components and if you like as example a different handlebar, you can choose it out of their range.
Is there lighting available?
Yes, we have a 3D printed solution for the taillight, that doesn’t get covered by any luggage set-up. As front light, we opted for the Trelock Lighthammer Collection, not too expensive, but powerful and reliable.
Can I order the Gyttja with a Bike tracker
Yes, we can equip the e-assisted bikes with an “It’s my bike” GPS tracker system.

How do I order my Gyttja bike or frame?
Please contact us at info@nccr.se
Delivery and Delivery Time
When the Gyttja production ramped up at the end of October 2025, we plan with a delivery time for standard frames and Gyttja bikes of 4 weeks, what we try to scale down to 2 weeks in the longer run. For TaylorMade frames and bikes please contact us, and we will discuss when it fits into manufacture the components.
Transport costs vary if the tail unit and wheels are mounted or not. The Gyttja bike can be disassembled for shipping to make a very compact package, but we can deliver also fully assembled, so that you just straighten the handlebar and you are ready to hit the road.
Warranty
We give a 99 years frame warranty for the first registered owner of our Gyttja bikes plus the usual 2 year general warranty of all components, wear parts, like brake pads, excluded.
For “frames only” sales we give a 5 year warranty, what can be extended for another 5 years if the frame will be send for inspection to us after the first 5 years.
After the 2-year general warranty, the frame warranty does not cover any surface treatment, cosmetics or shipments.
That means: You send us the frame on your costs; we repair it on our costs (no questions asked) and send it back to you on your costs. If you like the frame re-painted, we do that for extra costs.
We plan to handle the warranty gently, what requires an amount of honesty, if your bike got driven over by a bus or you really abuse the frame, talk to us. When we understand what happened we can handle the case accordingly.
Which approvals do Gyttja Pedelecs come with?
We confirm the CE conformity for the bike and label it on the frame. Additionally, we let approve the EMC conformity (electro magnetic compatibility) by an independent institution.
General Questions
About Made in Europe
We at NCCR believe in cooperation, in a free world, we work hard and we speak up. We think that there are parts of the bicycle manufacturing process that can still be successfully made in Europe, like our frames. But we also see that regarding the components in many cases the ship already has sailed, direction East. We use Pinion gear boxes and neodrives e-drive systems both for the most parts made in Germany. We source what’s possible in Europe when quality and performance meet our specifications. Only if we close the lines, can we secure local engineering / made in Europe and help to consolidate the industry to invest in sustainable reliable manufacturing. In the meantime, quality Far East components can be the key to complete reliable and inexpensive bicycles.
Is Gyttja an open-source project?
No it is not, but we share the 3D print models of all parts where we use that technology, as we believe in decentral manufacturing to minimize the ecological footprint.
Does Gyttja get sold through bicycle dealers?
Not now and at the actual situation of the bike market we also think that’s not a direction we should head to, as it just makes the bikes more expensive and the pricing less reliable. But it might be in the future that we will cooperate on some markets with exclusive importers if it is for the benefit of our customers, like offering better service or cutting down on freight costs.
Who services my Gyttja bike?
Any bicycle dealer. We have a long history at NCCR of supporting workshops, mechanics and individuals worldwide to supply all necessary information and parts to do a perfect job. All necessary work on Gyttja bikes will be explained in Tutorial videos and in the manual. Both available for Pro and end consumers.
How I get spare parts for my Gyttja bike?
All parts will be available in the Gyttja web shop system, where both private owners and registered bike shops can order.
Will Gyttja be available as S-(Speed) Pedelec with legal 45 km/h?
It’s not decided yet. Please see us at the CyclingWorld 2026 in Düsseldorf for the answer.
Do you sponsor / support Racers, Adventurer, Charity projects?
Yes, we plan to use a significant percentage of our profit to support the community. Even if we make no big profit yet, it’s always worth asking and we look at what we can figure out together. Thank you.
How is the Team at NCCR best to reach?
As we all know, it’s some days hard to follow all the messages coming to the channels. Best and easiest way to start a conversation is to drop us an email to info@nccr.se. That’s the channel we see all in the Team and the fastest way for us to decide who takes care about your question. It’s helpful to tell us besides your question, where you are located. You can also call us +46-653-41050 and talk to Pär.
